School Delays and Closures Due to Winter Weather Conditions
Student safety is our primary concern when considering to run, delay or cancel school during inclement weather. We live in a mountain community with constantly changing road and weather conditions so these can be tough decisions to make.
We make every effort to provide a consistent educational program for our students and get them to and from school safely. Our Transportation Department and our bus drivers are experienced and well-trained in winter driving, but if parents believe that road conditions are questionable, they have every right to keep their children at home.
It is difficult to delay or cancel school based only on weather predictions since the predictions are not always accurate. When there is inclement weather in the morning, the district’s Manager of Transportation and the Superintendent - in consultation with the NOAA, the National Weather Service, Colorado Department of Transportation and local road and bridge departments - assess weather and road conditions. If road conditions are poor at 6:00 a.m., but weather predictions indicate quick improvements, we will initiate a two-hour delay. In the event of a two-hour delay, buses will run exactly two hours later than normal. Half-day morning preschool programs are canceled if there is a two-hour delay. If weather predictions indicate worsening conditions, we will cancel school for the entire day.
Rarely, if ever, do we dismiss school early due to inclement weather. It is safer to keep children at school once school is in session than to risk transporting them in adverse conditions or sending them to empty homes. By 1:00 p.m., we will decide whether to run the Summit Middle School after-school activities buses. Additionally, we make every effort to cancel after-school activities by this time if conditions are deteriorating..
If and when we make the decision to cancel, delay or dismiss school, we send this information out through our school district text and email messaging service. We will post the information on the school district website (www.summitk12.org) and update the transportation hotline at 970-368-1777. We notify the Summit Daily News and local radio stations, as well. Parents and community members can also sign-up for Summit County Alerts for school district and road delays and closures at SCAlert.
If there are no reports of a delayed start or cancellation, parents can assume that all schools are operating according to their normal schedule.

School Closings and Cancellations: Policy EBCE
The superintendent is empowered to close the schools or to dismiss them early in event of hazardous weather or other emergencies which threaten the safety, health or welfare of students or staff members. It is understood that he/she will take such action only after consultation with appropriate authorities. The Board shall ratify the closing at its next regular meeting.
Parents, students and staff members shall be informed early in each school year how they shall be notified in event of emergency closings or early dismissals.
When the superintendent has closed schools or dismissed them early, all buildings will be closed and all staff members will not be required to report to work.
