Making October 1 Count for Every Child

Why October 1 Matters: Every Student Counts

On Tuesday, October 1, Colorado takes a snapshot of student enrollment. This count determines the funding Summit School District receives for the entire school year—and, under new legislation, it influences funding for the next three years. Each student present on this day means more resources for:

  •  Teacher salaries and support staff
  • Classroom programs and curriculum
  •  Transportation and operations
  • Technology, safety, and enrichment opportunities

Important Clarification: The 11-Day Window

While October 1 is the official “Count Day,” students who are already enrolled before Oct. 1 may still be counted if they attend school at least once during the 11 school days following Oct. 1.

This means if your child is sick or has an unavoidable absence on October 1, as long as they return to school within that window, they will still be included in our official count.

That said, strong attendance on October 1 helps us ensure accuracy right away—so we encourage all students to be in class if at all possible. Simply put: every student counted strengthens our schools.

What’s at Stake

Colorado’s schools already receive thousands of dollars less per student than the national average. That means every single dollar counts more than ever here in Summit. Funding ensures we can:

  • Continue delivering Comprehensive Excellence in Education, from early learning through high school graduation.
  • Invest in Future-Ready Pathways like healthcare, computer science, outdoor leadership, and skilled trades.
  • Build on our commitment to Community Collaboration & Engagement, ensuring every child and family feels supported.

A Safe & Supportive Place for All Students

We recognize that recent ICE activity in our community has created fear and uncertainty for some families. Please know: Summit schools are and will remain safe, welcoming places for every child, regardless of immigration status.
Here’s what you can count on:

  • No Unauthorized Access: ICE or DHS agents may not enter school property without a judicial warrant signed by a judge. Access is only granted with direction from the Superintendent’s Office.
  • Student Privacy: Student and family information is protected under FERPA and will not be shared without proper authorization.
  • Equal Educational Access: Every student has the right to learn in a safe, welcoming environment.
  •  Security Protocols: All visitors must check in at the front office. Staff are trained to report unusual activity near schools immediately.

Please make sure your emergency contact information is current in PowerSchool so we can communicate quickly and identify trusted contacts if needed.

Our message is clear: We will protect the rights, dignity, and safety of every student. Families should not have to choose between sending their child to school and feeling secure.

Your Role in This Success

Families play the most important part in making October 1 a success. Here’s how you can help:

  • To the best of your ability, make sure your child is in school on Wednesday, October 1.
  • Plan ahead—schedule appointments or travel for another day.
  • Encourage your student by reminding them they are making a difference for their school just by showing up.

Together, We Make Every Student Count
October 1 isn’t just about numbers—it’s about our community coming together to ensure Summit students have the resources they deserve. Each child present means stronger schools, brighter futures, and a thriving community.
Thank you for helping us make sure that in Summit School District, Every Student Counts.
