Master Plan Community Engagement

Dear Summit School District Families and Community,

Over the past several months, SSD has been engaged in a comprehensive process to develop a 10-Year Facilities Master Plan.

Like many school districts across Colorado and the country, SSD is navigating declining enrollment, aging facilities, and rising operational costs. Addressing these challenges proactively allows us to make thoughtful, student-centered decisions today.

We are in the community engagement phase of the Master Plan process. During this stage, we will share the research and recommendations developed and hear directly from families, staff, community members, and local partners. No formal decisions have been made regarding the future of SSD facilities. The Board of Education (BOE) will consider recommendations only after community input and discussion.

District staff and the Master Planning Committee—which includes parents, educators, and community leaders—have examined several key areas, including facility conditions, enrollment trends, student program needs, and financial sustainability.

The work is guided by community-driven principles that prioritize safe and inclusive schools, high-quality learning environments, future-ready opportunities for students, responsible stewardship of taxpayer resources, and transparent long-range planning.

In the weeks ahead, we will continue sharing information and hosting community conversations across Summit County. Your feedback will help shape the next steps as the district evaluates options and considers how to maintain strong schools and learning opportunities for every Summit student.

Where We Are in the Process

The Key Pillars

Safe & Inclusive
Safe, secure, and modern facilities are the foundation of effective learning. Investing in updated infrastructure, secure entrances, and well-maintained learning environments ensures our schools remain places where safety, well-being, and achievement go hand in hand.

High Quality Learning Environments
Strong teaching and learning depend on high-quality learning environments and healthy school enrollment levels. Our facilities and staffing structures must support excellent instruction and collaborative teaching teams. By aligning facilities, staffing, and enrollment, we protect academic opportunities while ensuring fiscal responsibility and strong outcomes for every student.

Future-Ready Investment
Students need clear pathways to careers and real-world experiences. Modern learning spaces and specialized programs support hands-on, career-connected learning aligned with our Graduate Profile and prepare students for success beyond graduation.

Long-Range Responsible Stewardship
We will continue to care for community resources and plan for the long term in a fiscally responsible and sustainable manner.

We are hosting meetings focused on understanding facilities' needs, enrollment trends, and long-term sustainability to ensure strong learning opportunities for students over the next decade.
