Master Plan Update

At SSD, we are committed to transparency and meaningful community engagement as we plan for the future of our schools. This update is part of our ongoing effort to ensure that families, staff, and community members have clarity about the Master Plan Update.

The Facilities Master Plan Update is a 10-year roadmap to help Summit School District responsibly steward our community’s schools, land, and buildings—while ensuring high-quality learning environments for every student,

Ensuring  that the community is clear about the direction, and the Board of Education can make critical decisions.

It’s important to note: this process is separate from any potential bond or mill levy overide request.

Why Now?

Like most districts across Colorado, Summit is experiencing:

  • Declining student enrollment
  • Rising operational and maintenance costs
  • Aging facilities that require reinvestment or replacement
  • An ongoing responsibility to balance staffing, programs, and facilities in a sustainable and student-centered way

Proactive planning allows us to maintain buildings, invest wisely, and align our resources with long-term educational goals.

Who Is Involved?

A Planning Committee of 40+ parents, educators, staff, and community members has been meeting since October 2024 and will continue through spring 2026.

The Committee is:

  • Reviewing facility conditions and lifecycle needs
  • Evaluating educational program alignment
  • Considering sustainability and enrollment trends
  • Recommending priorities, timelines, and areas for further study
  • Serving as liaisons for community communication and feedback

The Master Plan Update is informed by:

Key focus areas:

  • Facilities & Infrastructure: Ongoing maintenance and future planning
  • Enrollment Trends: Understanding sustainability
  • Programmatic Needs: Supporting hands-on, future-ready learning
  • Financial Sustainability: Aligning resources with long-term goals

We are in Step 3: Developing and Evaluating Options

Fall 2025–Winter 2026 (Current):

The Committee is actively:

  • Refining and evaluating options using cost, enrollment, and lifecycle data
  • Assessing infrastructure and safety needs
  • Supporting educational adequacy and program alignment
  • Weighing trade-offs and identifying community priorities

This deep work lays the foundation for future conversations and transparent Board decisions.

January 2026:

The Committee will:

  • Provide input on facilities and infrastructure priorities
  • Discuss potential phasing and timeline options
  • Explore strategies for continued community engagement

Spring 2026:

Recommendations will be presented to the BOE, which will determine next steps and timeline for further study, engagement, and decision-making.

About Consolidation: What Is—and Is Not—Happening

At this time:

  • No final decisions have been made about consolidation
  • Fall 2026 is not a preferred timeline for any school closure
  • Any decision will involve further community input and a thoughtful process

The Committee is:

  • Reviewing data on enrollment, facility needs, and educational impacts
  • Identifying options that may require deeper analysis
  • Discussing timelines and additional engagement steps

As consolidation is considered further, it will include:

  • Detailed analysis and study
  • Community-wide meetings and feedback
  • Transparent communication of timelines
  • Board of Education discussion and action

We know that facilities planning can feel personal and uncertain. We remain committed to:

  • Clear, consistent updates
  • Thoughtful, inclusive pacing
  • Responsible stewardship of our community’s assets
  • Centering students, families, and educators in every step

Good planning takes time. We’re using this time to listen, study, and engage together.
